Got a job!

As a Career Step student, you have the option of enrolling in the Spheris Training Track — a type of on-the-job education/training.  So when you pass your final examination, you will be offered a full-time position with the company.  It’s a wonderful option if you’re looking for full-time work.

So on Thursday, I received my job offer with Spheris and will be starting work on July 16th.  I will train for 2 weeks, on day hours and then switch to my normal schedule.  I picked a 12-hour window shift from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m., which means I will work 8 hours during that window of time.  My fiance gets home around 4:30pm so he can take care of our son while I work.

I feel so blessed to have this opportunity, to be able to work full-time from home doing something I really enjoy and being home with my son all day.

I’m a little nervous starting work but I guess that’s normal when you start a new job and a new career path.  But overall I’m so excited to get started!

No longer a student!

I took my final examination 2 weekends ago and got the results yesterday.  I passed!  This was my 2nd attempt at the transcription part of the test.  The first time around I received 98% on the objective portion and missed the transcription part by 3%.  I felt pretty down about that, but went forward and took the exam again.  We get 3 attempts at the test and I will take that part again just to see if I can get an even higher score on the 3rd try (plus it’s just good practice while I wait to start work).  But at least this time, I passed the test.

So what is next?  Next will be a phone call from the company I will be working for, Spheris.  They will let me know what hours are available to work (I plan on working in the evenings when Mark is home) and they will let me know the start date, which should be in July sometime.  I’m VERY excited and a little nervous about actually starting work.  I’ve been a student for 7 months so this will be a whole new world.

Welcome!

I’ve decided to start blogging about my foray into medical transcription.  I’ve been studying medical transcription through Career Step since the end of November of last year.  I took the final examination about a month ago, which is in 2 parts but didn’t quite pass one part of the test (missed by 3%).  I was initially very disappointed in myself.  But I picked myself back up and figured out where my weaknesses are.  So I retook the one part again about 1 1/2 weeks ago and am awaiting those results.  I feel like I did much better but ya just never know.

In the meantime, I’m planning my wedding, which is in August and also studying for the RMT credential.  It is a personal goal of mine to earn this credential so I will be getting ready for that test this summer and my goal is to take it this fall.

If you have any questions, about medical transcription or Career Step, don’t hesitate to contact me.  I’m not an expert to say the least but I can share what I know so far LOL.
