Stedman’s Medical Terms and Phrases

I’m always a little hesitant to invest in medical reference books, since I use the internet most of the time for research but I do have a few books that I really use a lot.  One of them is Stedman’s Medical Terms and Phrases.  It’s a big book that I keep open right next to my computer and it has saved me a few times!  I was just at the Stedman’s website and noticed that book is on sale for 50% off.  That is a great deal!  I do highly recommend it as it is useful for any medical speciality.  Check it out!

Changing hours

I had been working full time with Spheris but with an 11-month old son at home (and a 2nd on the way) that was just not working.  Mainly because I need sleep! LOL  Spheris is great and allowed me to change my hours to 32 hours a pay period and now I’m doing a split shift where I work a few hours before my son wakes up in the morning and then a few hours in the evening after Dad gets home.  This is working out so much better for me.

How do you manage to juggle your family life and working from home?

Expanding words

As a Spheris employee, I got to learn how to use Shorthand, my first experience with word expanders.   I tell ya….I can’t type without a word expander now.  It does take time to get used to it but it really is worth it.  Since I’m going to be an independent contractor now I decided to go ahead and purchase Shorthand.  I also highly recommend the book, Saving Keystrokes, by Diana Rolland which you can use with any word expander program as a way to develop a system for you to remember your expanders (probably the hardest part about using them).

What is your favorite word expander program?  Any tips?

Mpls Bridge Collapse

We live about 10 minutes or so from this bridge.  I can’t believe this has happened.  My thoughts and prayers go out to those who involved in this tragedy.
