I graduated from Career Step in June of ‘07. I think finding the right MT company that works for my needs has been the toughest challenge of this whole process. I did start with Spheris, which is a great company, but found having a little one at home (and another on the way) I needed a more flexible schedule. I did learn a lot from Spheris and will always recommend it as a good place to work. Then I started at Sten-Tel which I liked because of the flexibility they allow in your schedule. That was very important to me not to have set hours. I also like Sten-Tel a lot (I’m doing editing as well as straight transcription and I LOVE the editing part) but I’m not quite getting enough work for my needs. So I decided to find a 2nd flexible company that can supplement my work at Sten-Tel and I just started at Superior Global. They use the same platform as Sten-Tel which is great since I’m used to that platform now. I will be doing ER reports as well as psych notes, which I really like. So now I think I’m set. It took me a few months to figure out what my needs were and the right companies to fit those needs.
My advice for a new grad? Really look at what type of schedule you need. Can you work a set schedule or do you need a company that doesn’t require a set schedule? There are so many MT companies out there that you don’t have to settle for just anything. Do your research! I’m a frequent user at the Career Step message board to research companies and see what companies are hiring. It helps to hear what others are going through.
Just remember, don’t settle!
