Happy New Years

I just wanted to wish those that stop by a Happy New Year!
I’m very grateful for 2008 and my new career of medical transcription. 2008 was the first full year I was able to work from home doing my job and that is a great thing, especially during these tough times.

If you ever have any questions about going into medical transcription, Career Step or need any advice, don’t hesitate to send me an email or post here.

Onto 2009!

My update

I haven’t been very good about updating this blog so I figured I’d better do some updating now.

I’m very excited to announce I have been promoted at Superior Global Solutions to QA (quality assurance).  Originally about a month ago I was offered a similar position with a different MT company but was very disappointed with that company.  I had not left SGS so I was still with them.  I just went back to my original position and let them know I was interested in that type of work in the future.  So now today I received an official offer and I’m looking forward to starting the next chapter in my MT journey.  I will officially start that position on Tuesday, December 16th.  I will be mainly working evenings (8pm-2am) which will be a little tough but it’s doable.  My husband works evenings (the kids are in bed by 7pm) so then I can sleep in while my husband is with the kids in the morning (he works until 10pm).  There is a chance that he may be going to days in the near future with a promotion as well so then we will need to do part-time daycare just so I can sleep in a little on the days I work.

I’ll keep this blog more updated as time goes on.

Anyway, that’s it from the MT front.

Part-time vs full-time work

A note from one of my blog readers:  “I love reading your blog! I am also in the middle of the Career Step Course (in the Clinics portion) and it is so nice to read about others who have done the same. I stay at home with my kids and I also ordered the text materials to study from. I found that even though I had easy access to the online course, sometimes it was easier to read in bed or to take with me wherever I went. Through the summer it has been hard for me to stay motivated. I am getting worried about when it comes time to find a job if I can find one that fits what I need (part time work). I know a lot of companies push for the full timers. Did you have any experience with that? Anyway, sorry for the long comment, but thanks for all the advice that I get from reading your blog!” Amanda~

Thank you for stopping by and congrats on being half way done with the course!  That is a big accomplishment!

A lot of companies do want full-time work at the beginning but you will find companies offering part-time work as well.  I would look for companies that offer IC (independent contractor) positions as they will generally offer more flexibility.  But also remember every company defines full time a little different.  For me at Superior Global Solutions, they define full-time at 32 hours or more, which was perfect for me.  And then some other companies define it as 40 hours a week which was too much for me.  There are so many companies out there so you will find what you will need, just make sure you do the research.  Whenever I wanted to find information on a particular medical transcription company, I would search through the Career Step message board and do a search on that company.  And for job hunting, I always check out this website.

Good luck to you Amanda!

Companies that hire new MTs

Generally, I get a few emails each week asking about where to find a medical transcription job.  I always recommend going to mtjobs.com and also do a search at the Career Step message board (where I graduated).  Here is a compiled list of companies that are known to hire new medical transcriptionists.  I always recommend as well that you apply for any job, no matter what they say for experience.  You never knew what it may lead to.  Some companies will say no but maybe keep you on file for later or some companies may generally only hire those with a few years experience but hire a few new people from time to time.  You never know.
